Must-have checklist
| Feature | Why it matters | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| File manager | You need access to saves and config files. | No way to download your world files. |
| Manual backups | Protects worlds before updates and config changes. | Backups exist but cannot be downloaded. |
| Restart button | Most config changes need a clean restart. | Support ticket required for basic restart. |
| Config editor | Helps change password, name, port, and player slots. | Only vague "advanced settings" with no file access. |
| Server location | Ping depends on distance to your group. | Only one region far from most players. |
| Cancel anytime | Useful while testing a new game. | Long commitment before your group is sure. |
Managed host vs VPS
| Question | Choose managed hosting if... | Choose VPS if... |
|---|---|---|
| Do you want a panel? | You want browser controls for restarts and files. | You are comfortable with SSH and Linux. |
| Do you need support? | You want help when updates or file access break. | You can debug runtime, firewall, and service issues yourself. |
| Do you care about cost? | You accept paying extra for convenience. | You want control and lower monthly cost. |
| Do you need backups? | You want panel backups plus manual downloads. | You can build your own backup routine. |
Questions before paying
- Can I download the save/world folder anytime?
- Can I edit the active config file directly?
- Can I restart the server without contacting support?
- Does the host expose or document the Romestead server port?
- Can I move the world away later if the group changes host?
- Is there a location close to most of my players?
- Can I cancel after one month if the group stops playing?
When not to pay yet
Stay free for the first test night if your group is not sure they will keep playing. Self-hosting is enough for learning the flow. Consider managed hosting after the group has a world worth protecting, wants 24/7 access, or keeps losing time to port forwarding and restart chores.
