Romestead server password not working

Fix password, config, restart, and join mistakes before rebuilding the whole dedicated server.

Short answer: stop the server, edit the active config file, keep the password simple while testing, restart the server, then ask one friend to join. If the old password still works or no password works, you may be editing the wrong config file.

Password fix checklist

  1. Stop the Romestead server before editing the config.
  2. Make a backup copy of the current config file.
  3. Use a simple test password with letters and numbers only.
  4. Check JSON punctuation if the password is stored in config.json.
  5. Restart the server after saving the file.
  6. Ask one friend to test direct connect and type the password manually.
  7. If connection fails before password prompt, troubleshoot networking first.

Do not confuse password with connection failure

If players cannot reach the server at all, the password is probably not the first problem. A blocked firewall, wrong public IP, bad router rule, or changed local IP can look like a password issue because friends never reach the real join step.
