Romestead private server setup

Build a friends-only co-op world with a password, clear server name, working direct connect, and a backup plan.

Short answer: install the dedicated server, launch once, back up the generated config, set a simple password and server name, open UDP 8050, test direct connect with one friend, then create a save backup before the first real session.

Private server checklist

  1. Install the Romestead Dedicated Server with SteamCMD App ID 4763510.
  2. Install .NET 8 Runtime if the server exits immediately.
  3. Launch the server once so config and save folders are generated.
  4. Back up the config file before changing password or server name.
  5. Set a private password and share it only with your group.
  6. Use a clear server name your friends can search exactly.
  7. Open or forward UDP 8050 if friends connect from outside your network.
  8. Test direct connect with one friend before inviting everyone.
  9. Make a save backup after the first successful session.

Common private server mistakes

When to move beyond home hosting

If the group wants 24/7 access, the host PC cannot stay online, or every session starts with router troubleshooting, compare VPS or managed hosting. A private server is valuable because the group has progress to protect; the hosting choice should protect that progress, not just launch the game.
